Daniel Docter Wins Dr. Patricia Flach Award at ISFRI 2023

We are delighted to announce that Daniel Docter and his team from Amsterdam UMC, The Netherlands, have won the prestigious Dr. Patricia Flach award for the best presentation at the 12th Annual ISFRI Meeting held in Toulouse, France, in May 2023.

Award-Winning Presentation: Micro Computed Tomography for Post Mortem Imaging

The presentation, titled "Micro Computed Tomography for Post Mortem Imaging," explored the limitations of traditional autopsy and classical 2D histology, proposing micro-focus X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) as a compelling alternative. This technique allows for the visualization of samples with isotropic resolution of several micrometers, bridging the gap between dissection and histology. The team's research demonstrated the use of micro-CT on formalin-fixed human samples, including pelvis, orbita, foot, larynx, and fetal samples, with enhanced soft tissue X-ray attenuation using buffered Lugol’s solution as a contrast-enhancing staining agent (CESA). By optimizing staining and imaging protocols tailored to sample size, the team showcased the potential of micro-CT to provide detailed 3D imaging with microscale resolution, highlighting its invaluable application for clinical sample evaluation.

Congratulations to Daniel Docter and his team for their outstanding contribution to the field of forensic radiology and imaging.
